Entrance Exams

The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is a standardized exam used by most nursing schools to assess readiness for their program. 

Exam Breakdown

  • READING: 45 questions (55 minutes).

    • Focuses on understanding and interpreting passages, including key ideas, craft and structure, and integrating information. ​

  • MATH: 38 questions (57 minutes)

    • ​Covers topics like numbers, algebra, geometry, measurement, and data analysis. 

  • SCIENCE: 50 questions (60 minutes)

    • ​Includes human anatomy and physiology, biology, chemistry, and scientific reasoning. 

  • ENGLISH: ​37 questions (37 minutes)

    • Covers grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and language usage. 

Overall: 150 scored questions and 20 unscored questions, with a total of 209 minutes to complete

Recommended Prep Resources

  • TEAS Mastery App → recommend for practice questions (~$16/month)

    • lot's of practice questions!! they have good explanations for answers as well​

  • Future RN → TEAS course that breaks everything down ($99-$149)

    • slightly expensive, but in my opinion is worth it!

  • ATI Website → lots of resources & test prep (they make the exam so it's very similar!) ($99-$149)

    • Recommend taking their Practice Tests A & B since they're very similar to the actual exam

  • Nurse Cheung → breaks down concepts, super helpful for science ($0-$60)

    • on YouTube, but has different test prep & subscription types

  • Mometrix → practice questions, detailed book, etc

    • ​Not my personal favorite, but I did like their free practice tests

  • Facebook groups → can gain insight into peoples tips & tricks!

Situational judgment test (SJT) used by many medical schools and other programs to assess an applicant's non-cognitive skills and personal qualities.

 

** Currently this exam is only required by CSU Long Beach!

14 scenarios with open-ended responses; some are presented as videos and others as written text. Responses are either typed or open ended!

Recommended Prep Resources

Assesses a student's readiness for the NCLEX. Similar to the TEAS except it covers a wider range of health related topics.
